Anyone can call themselves professional. Certification means an independent body tested the claim.
What CMI is
The Cleaning Management Institute
CMI is the training and certification arm of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association. It sets the curriculum and the testing standard that custodial technicians are measured against across the United States.
Certification is earned per technician, not bought per company. It requires completing the coursework, passing the assessment, and accumulating continuing education units to keep the credential current. It expires — ours is renewed rather than framed and forgotten.
What that means for you is narrow but real: the person cleaning your building was trained on chemistry, surface types and procedure by someone other than the company that employs them.
Curriculum
What the certification actually covers
The Basic Certified Custodial Technician credential covers the core procedures of commercial custodial work. These are the modules named on the certificate itself.
